14 killed in political violence, 119 journalists attacked this year: ASK

Rights group Ain O Salish Kendra in their half-yearly report released on Monday said that at least 14 people were killed and 2,422 other injured in 179 reported incidents of political violence while one journalist was killed and at least 119 journalists faced various kinds of attacks, intimidation and assaults across the country since January 1.

The rights group published the report based on their media scanning and the information from their own rights defenders.

The report read that at least 179 incident of political violence took place centring local government elections and political events leaving 14 killed and 2,422 other injured.

Of them, seven incidents took place in Dhaka district leaving 192 injured while 10 other incidents took place in Barisal district which left 139 injured.

It stated that six killings took place in the reported incidents of ‘gunfight’ with police and Rapid Action Battalion.

During the period, six people became victims of enforced disappearance and were later found arrested in various cases.

In the last six months, at least 24 people died of lynching and half of the incidents took place in Dhaka division while nine in Chattogram and one each incident in Khulna, Barishal and Mymensingh divisions.

At least 51 inmates died in jails in the period and of them 24 were convicted prisoners while 27 others were under trial.

The report stated that one journalist was killed and 119 others faced assaults, harassment, threat, cases and obstructions for their work since January.

In the same time, at least 24 cases were filed under Digital Security Act prosecuting 60 people. Of the 60 people, 26 were arrested immediately.

Of them, five cases were filed over making derogatory comment against prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

The ASK also recorded 10 killings in the shooting by Indian Border Security Force while 14 others were injured.
