Decision to deploy observers after assessing pre-polls conditions: EU mission

The visiting EU election exploratory mission enquired about the Election Commission's preparations for the next parliamentary polls.

The EU mission also asked the EC whether there is any time frame of application for sending election observers.

The EU Mission head Riccardo Chelleri said they are in Bangladesh to assess pre-electoral condition and prepare an analysis for high representative of the EU, which will then decide whether or not to deploy an election observation mission of the EU for the next general polls.

After a meeting between the mission and the Election Commission today at the EC office in the capital, Ashok Kumar Debnath, additional secretary of the EC, said the EC informed that it will be good if they send application by September as there are some other formalities from home and foreign ministries.

"The commission said they [EU] can send as many neutral observers as they want," he said while talking to the reporters.

Ashok also said the delegation enquired about the EC preparations for holding the next elections including voter list, voting centre and CCTV installations.

At the meeting, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal replied different queries of the delegations.

The delegation team held the meeting for about one hour from 11:00am.
