Thousands of people in Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Nilphamari have been affected by inundation of low-lying areas as the water levels in the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in has been flowing above the danger level.
Houses of many people in those districts have become waterlogged, report our Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari correspondents.
Meanwhile, the water level of the Brahmaputra and other rivers has also been increasing due to rainfall and onrush of water coming from upstream in India, WDB officials said.
Around 80 chars and 40 villages along the banks of Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar were inundated, and Aman paddy fields and roads in these areas have also been submerged.
In Lalmonirhat's Hatibandha upazila, Teesta river has been flowing 40 cm above the danger level at Dalia Point of Teesta Barrage since 6:00am today. All the 44 gates of the Teesta Barrage were opened due to the water pressure coming from upstream, according to the WDB.
The Dharla river water wasflowing 22 cm above the danger level at Shimulbari point of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila while the water of Dudhkumar was flowing 56 cm above the danger level at Pateshwari point of Nageshwari upazila in Kurigram.
Shunil Kumar, executive engineer of Lalmonirhat Water Development Board, said Teesta and Dharla shoal areas have been flooded.
Abdullah Al Mamun, executive engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board, said the flood control dykes have become vulnerable at four places along the Dudhkumar shoal areas.
Farmer Meser Ali of Char Harinchara area of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila said their village was flooded by Teesta river water. The water has already entered the houses in the area, he said.
Asaduzzaman Roni, chairman of Bamondanga union of Kurigram's Nageshwari upazila, said the entire union was flooded by the Dudhkumar river water. Many villagers of char areas have taken shelter at flood centres.
Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ullah told the journalists that sufficient amount of dry food has been allocated for the flood-affected people. "These dry foods are being distributed through upazila administration and union parishads. Affected peoplein the vulnerable areas have been brought to shelters," he said, adding that around 2 lakh people were affected.
In Nilphamari, the water of the Teesta river has been flowing at a level of 52.47 cm, which is 32 cm above the danger level since 6:00am.
Around 25,000 have been affected as low-lying areas in their villages have been submerged in Dimla and Jaldhaka upazila, said Rashedin Mowla, sub divisional engineer of the WDB at Dalia division in Nilphamari.
