Senior asst secy of commerce ministry dies of dengue

SM Nazia Sultana, senior assistant secretary of the commerce ministry (World Trade Organization wing), died of dengue infection at a hospital in Dhaka today.

The officer of the 30th BCS breathed her last while undergoing treatment at BIRDEM hospital this morning, said Md Haidar Ali, public relations officer of the ministry.

Nazia, who was eight months pregnant, was admitted to the hospital two days ago.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and Senior Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh expressed deep condolences over Nazia's death.

In a condolence message, the minister said Nazia was a very talented and smart officer. "We have lost an honest and worthy officer with the untimely death of Nazia Sultana."

The dengue situation in the country has turned serious this year. As of yesterday, 185 people have lost their lives due to dengue in the country.

At present, a total of 7,463 dengue patients are under treatment in various public and private hospitals of the country.

This year, 35,270 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals and received treatment across the country.

Among them, 21,187 people received treatment in Dhaka and 14,083 people outside Dhaka.

Among the affected, 27,622 people have recovered and returned home.
