3 buses set on fire, several injured in Matuail

Three buses were set on fire during a clash between BNP members and law enforcers in Dhaka's Matuail area this noon.

Several persons including police members were injured during the clash that ensued around 11:30am as BNP men tried to sit-in there, said witnesses.

BNP leaders alleged that police attacked them without any provocation as they were tying to hold their programme peacefully.

SM Mehedi Hasan, a joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said they requested BNP activists to observe their programme peacefully but they attacked the law enforcers, leaving several injured.

Later, they were forced to disperse the BNP men, he said.

Police charged batons and lodged tear shell canisters to disperse the BNP men who retaliated with throwing brick chips, our Narayanganj correspondent reported from the spot.

Later, three buses were torched by unknown persons.

The clash continued sporadically as off filing the report around 1:00pm.

Lima Khanam, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence control room, said on information, two fire fighting units rushed there.
