Writer Panna Kaiser dies

Writer and former lawmaker Panna Kaiser died at a hospital in Dhaka Friday morning. She was 73.

Panna Kaiser, also a children’s organizer, died at United Hospital in Bangladesh capital Dhaka while undergoing treatment there, said Khelaghar’s central committee leader Aniket Acharjee.

Panna Kaiser is the wife of martyred intellectual Shahidullah Kaiser and the mother of actress Shomi Kaiser and banker Amitav Kaiser.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and prime minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages expressed condolences at the death of Panna Kaiser.

Panna Kaiser was born on May 25, 1950 at the Barura Upazila in Cumilla in the then East Pakistan.

She completed her Master’s in Bengali Literature from Dhaka University in 1969. Later, she taught Bengali Literature at Badrunnessa College in Dhaka.

Panna Kaiser became a presidium member of the country’s largest children’s organisation ‘Khelaghar’. She had been the chairperson of the presidium of the organization since 1992.

She was a former lawmaker from a reserved seat for women during 1996-2001 term of Awami League.

Panna Kaiser was awarded 2021 Bangla Academy Literary Award in the research on liberation war category.
