Munshiganj trawler capsize: 5 still missing as rescue operations resume

Rescue operations resumed from 7:00am this morning, less than 12 hours after a trawler capsized in the tributary of the Padma river near Munshiganj's Louhajang upazila, leaving at least eight people dead.

Fire service members stopped the rescue work around 2:00am earlier today due to bad weather.

Abdul Matin, acting station officer of Louhajang Fire Service, said members of the navy, coast guard, naval police and fire service are engaged in the rescue operation, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.

At least five people, including two children and three women, are still missing, said Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Md Abu Zafar Ripon.

Among the deceased, three were women and five were children. They were identified as Popy Akhtar, 26, Happy Akhtar, 28, Saqib, 8, Sajibul, 4, Mokseda, 40, Rakib, 12, Humaira, 5 months, and Farihan, 10.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Munshiganj Abu Zafar Ripon said a five-member investigation committee was formed to probe the incident.

Additional District Magistrate Sharmin Ara has been made the head of the committee. The committee has been asked to submit the inquiry report within three working days.

The trawler carrying 46 people capsized after a collision with a bulkhead last night. The incident took place around 8:30pm when a sand-laden trawler hit the engine-run boat near Rashkathi village under Khidirkhati union of Louhajang upazila.
