MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital interns continue strike

Intern doctors of Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital continued their indefinite strike on Tuesday for second consecutive day protesting at vandalism at the hospital over the death of a patient on Monday afternoon.

The protesting doctors demanded punishment of the attackers and adequate security for the doctors.

They took position on the hospital premises since Tuesday morning and chanted slogans to press home their demands.

Earlier on Monday night, the hospital unit of Interns Council called on the indefinite strike after the attendants of a patient ran havoc in the ward 35 of the hospital alleging that their patient died due to negligence in providing treatment.

Apart from running vandalism in the doctors’ room and nurses’ room, the patient’s attendants allegedly tried to assault the on-duty doctors and nurses, the interns said.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police arrested four people on Monday night for their involvement in the vandalism and the ward master, Md Rawshan Habib, filed a case against them with the Kotwali Police Station in this regard on early Tuesday on behalf of the hospital authorities, the Kotwali Police Station inspector, Suman Kumar Chowdhury, told.

SOMCH director Brigadier General Mahbubur Rahman Bhuiyan told that they were trying to convince the interns for withdrawing their strike through assuring them of meeting their demands.

‘Routine activities of the hospital are going on by the senior and mid-level physicians,’ he added.
