BTRC official held for raping, blackmailing woman

Police arrested a deputy director of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) after a woman filed a case against him alleging rape and blackmail.

Deputy Director Sunjib Kumer Singha was arrested on Friday night in connection with the case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, said Parvez Islam, officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station.

Yesterday, police sent Sunjib to court with a remand prayer and the court granted permission to interrogate him in jail custody for one day.

Sunjib lives in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area and worked for the BTRC's Legal and Licensing division.

According to case the statement, Sunjib had a relationship with the complainant since 2013. The BTRC official raped her several times with falls promise of marriage and also taped their intimate moments, she alleged.

When the woman wanted to end the relationship, he threatened to release the videos on social media and raped her and physically torture her.

On August 15, Sunjib called the woman to his Dhanmondi home and hit her with a bottle with an intention to kill her, the plaintiff said in the case statement.

The woman managed to leave the house and filed a case with the Dhanmondi Police Station.
