Interns at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) started a three-day strike today in protest of an attack on them allegedly by law enforcers.
In a joint statement, Mahidul Haque Ayon and Pratik Biswas, president and secretary of Intern Chikitshak Parishad at MMCH, said they wanted exemplary punishment of the lawmakers responsible and also sought security at the workplace.
If the matter is not resolved, they will go for a tougher movement, they said.
Two members of police were suspended over the incident, reports our Mymensingh correspondent quoting police.
Zakiul Islam, deputy director of MMCH, said Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mahmudul Hasan, posted at Cox's Bazar Police Lines admitted his wife at the hospital around 10:00pm yesterday.
As the interns were busy with other patients, they asked Hasan to wait a little.
But Hasan got furious and misbehaved with the interns. The on-duty Ansar members also took Hasan's side, Zakiul said.
Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam, in-charge of MMCH police camp, rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Zakiul said when some interns went to the police camp demanding justice over Hasan's alleged misbehaviour, an altercation broke out between interns and police.
At one stage, the law enforcers attacked the interns, leaving eight of them injured, he alleged.
Soon after the incident, Mymensingh Superintendent of Police (SP) Masum Ahmed Bhuiyan and Mayor of Mymensingh Municipality Ekramul Haque Titu visited the spot.
ASI Hasan and a constable, Arif, were suspended following the incident, police said.
Contacted, Shah Kamal Akanda, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said two police personnel were also injured during incident.
The SP today formed a three-member probe body, headed by additional police superintendent Md Raihanul Islam and asked it to submit its report within three working days, said the OC.
