Dengue death toll rises to 691 as 20 more die in Bangladesh

The official death toll from dengue rose to 691 across Bangladesh this year as 20 more patients died in the past 24 hours till Thursday morning.

Of the fresh deceased, 11 were reported in the Dhaka city and nine others in different places outside the capital, according to official data.

At least 2,689 dengue patients were hospitalised across the country in the past 24 hours ending at 8:00am on Thursday.

Of the patients, 899 were reported in the Dhaka city alone, said a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services.

The mosquito-borne viral disease forced 1,40,711 people to get admitted to health facilities across the country.

Dhaka city alone accounted for about 72 per cent of deaths and 45.60 per cent of hospitalisation of the total hospitalised cases and deaths across the country.

On Thursday, 9,711 reported dengue patients, including 4,151 in the Dhaka city, were undergoing treatment in the government and private health facilities across the country.

Males have outnumbered females in dengue hospitalisation so far this year while females have outnumbered males in deaths.

Males accounted for some 61.8 per cent of the total hospital admissions and females accounted for 58.32 per cent of the total deaths, said the DGHS release.

A total of 16,903 dengue patients were hospitalised and 98 of them died in the first week of September, which showed the current dengue outbreak with high numbers of cases and fatalities.

A total of 566 dengue patients were hospitalised in January, 166 in February, 111 in March, 143 in April, 1,036 in May, 5,956 in June, 43,854 in July and 71,976 in August, said the DGHS press release.

A dengue outbreak was first officially reported in the country in 2000, when 5,551 people were hospitalised and 93 died, according to DGHS data.

This year the dengue death toll breaks all records of official death and hospitalisation.

The DGHS officials and health experts earlier warned of a bigger dengue outbreak in Bangladesh unless the preventive measures are taken.
