DAG Imran visits US embassy with family after govt sacks him

The government on Thursday night relieved deputy attorney Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan after refusing to be a signatory to a counter statement against some global leaders’ call to halt the trial of Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus.

The appointment of Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan as deputy attorney has been revoked and he has been relieved of the duty in public interest as per the rule 4(2) of Bangladesh Law Officer Order 1972,’ said a notification issued by the law ministry on Thursday.

Later on Friday, Imran along with his family members visited the United States embassy in Dhaka and waited for several hours.

He could not be reached for his comment.

‘At this time, we have no information to offer,’ said US Embassy spokesperson Bryan Schiller when he was asked about the media reports of Imran sought shelter at the embassay.

Gulshan police deputy commissioner Md Shahidullah said they spoke to Imran while he was leaving the embassy.

‘He told us that he came to embassy on his personal ground and now is returning his Lalmatia home,’ Shahidullah told New Age at about 8:20pm.  

Imran on September 4 said, ‘I think the distinguished global leaders rightly called for halting Yunus’ trial, terming his trial judicial harassment.’

He said that the attorney general’s office was collecting signatures from state’ law officers including the attorney general, additional attorneys general, deputy attorneys general and assistant attorneys general against the foreign personalities’ statement.

The signature was sought in a message circulated in a Whatsapp group of the 214 law officers of the state and the law officers were asked to put their signatures on the joint statements by 4:00pm on September 4, he added.

Attorney general AM Amin Uddin, however, journalists that he was unaware about the incident as he did not seek any statement over Yunus’ issue.  

Deputy attorney general AKM Amin Uddin Malik, who is the admin of the law officers’ Whatsapp group, told New Age that he was collecting signatures of general lawyers in line with prime minister’s stance to oppose the global leaders’ call in favour of Yunus.

He says, ‘The cases against Yunus could be dealt in other ways. But all thinks have been done to create pressure on him.’

Imran later said that there were many old cases pending with the Labour Tribunals.

‘But the cases of Yunus has been expedited in recent time,’ he added.

Law minister Anisul Huq at a briefing told reporters on September 5 that DAG Imran breached discipline by talking to media without taking permission from the attorney.

He also said that the process is under went to take action against Imran.
