361 students commit suicide from January till August in 2023

At least 361 school, college, madrassah and university students across Bangladesh killed themselves in the last eight months, revealed a study on Saturday.

Aachol Foundation, a social organisation initiated by students, conducted the study titled — Students Suicide Rate Increasing: Which Way the Solution?— from January 2023 to August based on the reports of more than 105 national, local, and online newspapers and portals.

According to the findings, the number of suicide increased significantly as 361 students committed suicide in the last eight months where the number of suicide were 532 in 2022 and 101 in 2021.

Among the victims, 169 were school students, 96 were college students, 30 were madrassah students and 66 were university students, it said.

The report also said that the highest 77.3 per cent of victims were from the 13 to 19 years age group, 8.30 per cent victims were from 1 to 12 years age group, 21.6 per cent were from 20-25 years age group and 2.80 per cent were from age group 26 to 30 years age group.

59.30 per cent of the victims were girls.

The highest number of students, 31.60 per cent, committed suicide out of emotion, while romantic relationships and failure in examinations also triggered many students to commit suicide.

Tansen Rose, the founding president of the Aachol Foundation, which primarily works to make students aware of the importance of mental health, said, ‘Most of the students committed suicide out of emotion and it is alarming for us.’

He stressed giving importance on the parenting and increasing family bonding to prevent the incidents of suicide.

Aachol Foundation also gave 11 points proposals to combat the incidents of suicide in the country.
