15 indicted in ASP Anisul murder case

A Dhaka court on Tuesday framed charges against 15 people, including National Institute of Mental Health and Hospital (NIMH) registrar Abdullah Al Mamun, in a case filed over the murder of ASP Anisul Karim Shipon on November 9, 2020.

Among the accused, Abdullah and 13 others, now on bail, pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after Judge Sheikh Samidul Islam of Dhaka's Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court read out the charges to them.

Before that, the judge dismissed the petitions submitted for discharging them from the charges of the case.

Another accused, Sakhawat Hossain Remon, went abroad to avoid the arrest and charges were framed against him in his absence.

The 13 other accused are --Mind Aid Psychiatry and De-Addiction Hospital directors Fatema Khatun Moyna, Abdullah Al Mamun and Sazzad Amin; marketing manager Arif Mahmud Joy; coordinator Redwan Sabbir Sajib; kitchen staffer Masud Khan; ward boys Jobayer Hossain, Tanif Mollah, Sajeeb Chowdhury, Asim Kumar Pal and Saiful Islam Palash; guard Liton Ahamed; and pharmacist Tanvir Hasan.

The IO dropped the names of FIR-named accused Dr Nusrat from the charge-sheet as her involvement was not found during the investigation. Name of another accused, Niaz Morshed, was also dropped from the charge sheet as he died earlier.

The judge fixed November 9 for starting the trial of the case.

ASP Anisul was allegedly tortured to death on November 9, 2020 at the Mind Aid Psychiatry and De-Addiction Hospital.

Following Anisul's death, his father Faijuddin Ahmed filed the murder case with Adabor police station accusing 15 people, including five management personnel of the hospital.
