Passer-by lawyer dies after seven days on life support

Lawyer Bhuban Chandra Shil, 55, who suffered bullet injuries in the head during an attack on a police-listed terrorist in the city street a week ago, died at the intensive care unit of a hospital in Dhaka on Monday morning.

Bhuban, who was a passer-by there, was shot in the head and taken to Popular Hospital in Dhanmondi on the night of September 18.

He was on life support for a week and went under a surgery, but his condition deteriorated.

Doctors declared Bhuban dead at about 11:00am, said the hospital’s assistant manager Rezaul Karim.

Bhuban’s condition deteriorated after the surgery in his head and doctors could not remove the bullet.

The surgery was done to stop brain haemorrhage, but Bhuban’s physical condition was not ready for bullet removal, said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University former vice-chancellor and neurosurgeon professor Kanak Kanti Barua, who conducted the surgery.

Seven to eight attackers made the attack on terrorist Tariq Sayeed Mamun, who recently got released on bail, near Bangladesh Government Press in Tejgaon Industrial Area while Mamun was returning his house from Moghbazar by a car.

Mamun is an accused in the film actor Sohel Chowdhury murder case.

The victim’s wife Ranta Rani Shil filed a case with the Tejgaon Industrial Area police station against seven to eight unidentified assailants.

Two passers-by – Bhuban and Ariful – suffered bullet and stab injuries during the attack.
