Teesta recedes in Lalmonirhat, flowing above danger level in Kurigram

Water level of the Teesta river in Lalmonirhat receded, but the river was still flowing above danger level in Kurigram this morning.

Teesta river water was flowing 68cm below the danger level at Dalia Point in Lalmonirhat and flowing 30cm above the danger level at Kaunia Point in Kurigram at 9:00am, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent quoting Shunil Kumar, executive engineer of Lalmonirhat Water Development Board.

Shunil Kumar told that the Teesta water started to rise from yesterday noon due to damage in Chungthang Dam in North Sikkim, India. The water of Teesta crossed the danger level last afternoon and was flowing 25cm above the level at Dalia Point in Lalmonirhat at 8:00pm yesterday.

"We feared severe flood situation in Teesta shoal. People of Teesta shoal areas were asked through loudspeakers to come to safety yesterday. But the water receded this morning and is flowing below the danger level," he added.

Abdullah Al Mamun, executive engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board, told our Lalmonirhat correspondent that as the water at Kaunia Point was above the danger level, the riverside and char areas of Rajarhat, Ulipur and Chilmari upazilas of Kurigram have been flooded. If the water does not come from the upstream, the river water will go down rapidly, he said.
