Rain, water logging create traffic jams in Gazipur

Many roads and highways in and around Gazipur city went under water due to the incessant rain since yesterday.

There was intense traffic congestion on Rajbari Road, Joydebpur Bazar Bus Stand, Kalaptri Road, West Joydebpur, and Joydebpur intersection.

Water has accumulated in ditches while many streets were submerged, reports our Gazipur correspondent.

Due to the ongoing work of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project from Gazipur's Chandana intersection to Abdullahpur through Tongi, public transport has to pass through one lane.

As a result of the rain, vehicular movement on the road was further disrupted. Many passengers were stuck on the road through the entire night.

Nadeem Moral, a resident of Gazipur, said it took him more than five hours to return from Dhaka last night.

Marina Nasreen, a college teacher on her way to Dhaka was stuck at Chandana intersection this morning.

"I have been sitting at the same place for one and a half hours. The wheels of the car are not turning. God knows when I will return to Dhaka and when I will reach home," she said.

Sajib Safiqul, another Gazipur resident, said garbage was scattered everywhere in the city and the rain has made the situation worse.

"Mosquito breeding, poor traffic conditions, scarcity of drinking water, there is no end to residents' woes," he added.

Alamgir Hossain, deputy commissioner of police (south) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police's traffic department, said parts of Chandana intersection were submerged. "Some vehicles broke down as a result of going through water blocking roads. We are trying to reduce traffic congestion by removing broken down cars from the road."
