The commerce ministry has permitted five firms to import five crore pieces of eggs in order to increase supply of the protein item and check its prices in the domestic market, it said in a statement today.
Each of the five firms will import one crore pieces of eggs, the ministry added.
With this approval, the government granted permission to 15 entities to import 15 crore pieces of eggs over the last one month, a move that came amid public outcry after price of two pairs of the popular item surged up to Tk 60 in August.
However, no imported egg is yet arrive in the market, while two pairs of eggs are selling at Tk 48-Tk 50 in Dhaka today, according to prices data by Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).
Md Haidar Ali, public relations officer at the commerce ministry, said some consignments of imported eggs are expected to arrive this week.
