Khaleda’s health condition unchanged

The physical condition of the ailing former prime minister and main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Begum Khaleda Zia, remained unchanged on Tuesday.

Her physicians said earlier on Monday that Khaleda’s life was at risk because of the absence of proper treatment facilities she required in Bangladesh.

Khaleda Zia’s personal physician, AZM Zahid Hossain, said that her condition had not improved in the past 24 hours.

‘Basically, she needs treatment abroad at an advanced medical centre. We have nothing more to say now,’ he said.

On Monday, at a press conference, Khaleda Zia’s medical board advised an immediate liver transplant as they had exhausted all medical options available for her in Bangladesh.

Medical board chief Shahabuddin Talukder told reporters that they had done everything in their capacity to give her treatment. ‘Now we have nothing to do. She needs advanced treatment.’

Khaleda has been undergoing treatment at the hospital since August 9 with multiple health complexities, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung, heart, and eye problems.

The medical board recommended that Khaleda be urgently sent to a multidisciplinary centre abroad as there were no options available for her now in Bangladesh.

The board also said that the 78-year-old former prime minister’s life was at risk because of a lack of proper treatment to stop water accretion in her stomach and chest, internal bleeding, and infections caused by her liver cirrhosis problem.

A team of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Tuesday visited Khaleda at Evercare Hospital.

After visiting the hospital, the party, a former partner of the BNP-led alliance, urged the government to allow Khaleda to get medical treatment abroad.

‘Every citizen has the right to get proper medical treatment. Khaleda Zia is being deprived of advanced treatment due to the hostility of the government,’ Jamaat’s acting Ameer Mujibur Rahman said in a statement.
