No specific finding in probe on Sultana's death in Rab custody: HC

The High Court today said there were no specific findings in the probe report on detention and custodial death of Naogaon's union-level land office employee Sultana Jasmine.

The court, however, did not disclose the details of the report.

The HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Mohammad Mahbub Ul Islam set November 29 for hearing of the rule over the issue.

A government-formed investigation committee submitted the sealed report to the HC bench on August 17.

On April 5, the HC bench issued a rule asking authorities concerned to explain why Sultana's detention by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) officials without any case should not be declared illegal and unconstitutional.

In the rule, the court asked the officials concerned to show causes as to why they should not be directed to take action against the Rab members who picked up Sultana.

The HC bench issued the rule following a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Monoj Kumar Bhaumik.

On the same day, the bench directed the cabinet secretary to form a high-powered committee, including the chief judicial magistrate of Naogaon and a judicial officer nominated by the district judge, to conduct enquiry into the incident.

Sultana, an employee of a union-level land office in Naogaon, died in the custody of Rab-5 after suffering brain haemorrhage on March 24.
