Bangladesh rights activists Adilur, Elan freed on bail after 30 days in jail

Human rights organisation Odhikar secretary Adilur Rahman Khan and his colleague ASM Nasir Uddin Elan were released on bail on Sunday.

They were released 30 days after they were sent to jail in a case filed against them under the Information and Communication Technology Act.

Dhaka Central Jail senior superintendent Suvas Kumar Ghosh said on Sunday evening that they released Adilur and Elan on bail at 7:05pm after receiving their bail order.

The bail was granted by the High Court on October 10.

Lawyers Mohammad Ahsanuzzaman, Md Yousuf Ali, Khan Md Peer E Azam and Md Delwar Hossain received their senior Adil, also a Supreme Court lawyer, and Elan at the Dhaka Central Jail Gate.

‘My fight to establish the truth will continue. The truth will prevail,’ Adilur Rahman said immediately after his release.

The Dhaka Cyber Tribunal on September 14 jailed Adilur and Elan for two years for their fact-finding report on the number of deaths during the police drive against Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh activists in a demonstration at Shapla Chattar in Dhaka in May 5-6, 2013.

The tribunal judge, AM Julfikar Hayat, also fined Adil and Elan, Tk 10,000 each in the case filed with the Gulshan police in 2013 under Section 57(2) of the Information and Communication Technology Act 2006.

The single bench of Justice Md Emdadul Haque Azad granted Adilur and Elan bail for one year and admitted their appeal for a hearing.

The High Court stayed the fine until disposal of the appeal.

The jail authorities did not provide Adil and Elan with division status, defying a court order in 30 days after they landed in the Dhaka Central Jail on September 14.

The rights defenders’ lawyer Mohammad Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan said that the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal during their sentencing on September 14 asked the superintendent of the Dhaka Central Jail to give them division status.

Jail superintendent Suvash Kumar Ghosh said that they were waiting for a nod from the home minster to provide them with the division status.

On August 10, 2013, Detective Branch of police arrested Adilur in front of his Gulshan house, under Section 54 of the Penal code, for his involvement in anti-state activities and he was later implicated in the ICT case.

Adil was later released on bail granted by the High Court in October 2013.
