Lightning strike kills 25 across country

Dhaka, May 9 (Just News): At least 25 people were killed in lightning strikes in 13 districts of the country today.

Of them, six people were killed in Habiganj while three in Rajshahi, two each in Sunamganj, Nilphamari, Kishoreganj, Manikganj and Comilla and one each in Gaibandha, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Netrakona, Sirajganj and Chandpur, report our local correspondents.

In Habiganj, six farmers were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes while they were harvesting paddy in Baniachong, Nabiganj, Lakhai and Madhabpur upazilas this afternoon, our Moulvibazar correspondent reports quoting upazila administration sources.

The victims are: Joynal, 60, Swapon Das, 35, Narayan Paul, 35, Abu Talib, 20, Sufi Miah, 30, and Jaoharlal Sarker, 23.

In Rajshahi, three persons including a woman were killed and two others injured in lightning strikes in Tanore upazila.

The deceased were identified as Anisur Rahman, 30, of Bataspur, Elena Murmu, 35, of Chalkratiram and Sohag Ali, 16, of Duboil villages, said Rezaul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tanore Police Station.

The injured Ananda Kumar Saha, 32, and Liton Chandra Saha, 30, of Bataspur are receiving treatment at the upazila health complex.
In Nilphamari, one Asma Beowa, 50, was killed while a lightning struck her house in Dhukdhuki Shalon village while Noor Amin, 45, was killed when he was working at a field in Jaldhaka upazila.

In Sunamganj, two farmers -- Jewel Ahmed, 16, and Alamgir, 22, -- were killed by separate incidents of lightning strikes in Dharamapasha upazila and Sulla upazila around noon, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent.

In Manikganj, Saiful Islam Antor, 12, a sixth grader of Taluknagar High School died when a lightning struck him at his school.

Another victim Yakub Ali Sheikh, 48, a farmer of Hasadia village in Daulatpur upazila, died while working at a paddy field.

In Kishoreganj, Md Shahjalal Mia, 25, a polytechnic student of Nikoli upazila, and Dipali Rani Barman, 35, of Pakundia upazila died in separate incidents of lightning strikes.

In Gaibandha, Meher Ali, 35, a farmer, was killed when lightning struck him in Purbo Salua area of Fulchari upazila around 2:00pm.

In Narayanganj, school student Kulfi Akhter, 8, was killed as a thunderbolt struck her while playing at a field near her house in Sonargaon upazila.

In Mymensingh, Alal Uddin, 40, a farmer in Char Nilaxia village was killed by lightning while working in a field, said Khandaker Shaker Ahmed, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Kotwali Police Station.

In Netrakona, Islam Uddin, 55, a farmer in Khaliajuri upazila died on the spot in lightning strike, said Md Hazrat Ali, officer-in-charge of local police station.

In Chandpur, class-VIII student Jamal Hossain, son of Abdul Matin, died after a thunderbolt hit him while harvesting paddy along with his father at Ghugra Beel in Kachua upazila this afternoon, said Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kachua Police Station.

In Sirajganj, a thunderbolt hit Samtulla, 50, of Panagari village of Kazipur upazila while he was working in a field amid rain around 11:00 am, leaving him dead on the spot, UNB adds.

In Comilla, two boys were killed as a thunderbolt hit them when they were returning home from a paddy field at Jatrapur village in Muradnagar upazila, reports UNB.

The deceased were identified as Selim, 17, son of Firoz Miah, and Emon, 15, son of Abdul Hamid, 15, said AKM Manjur Alam, officer-in-charge of Muradnagar Police Station.
