2 CID officers held, DB DC Ahad under probe

The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police started a probe against its Wari division deputy commissioner Abdul Ahad and some other officers on the charges of torturing a businessman and extorting a cheque of Tk 3.60 crore.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, five people including a sub-inspector and a constable of Criminal Investigation Department were arrested on Sunday on charge of running a racket for abducting people and looting their valuables in the capital.

The DMP a detective branch officials said on Monday that they arrested CID sub-inspector Rezaul Karim, 39, constable Abu Sayeed, 32, and Sharif Hossain, 26, of Mymensingh.

Mohammad Emon, 21, and Abdullah AL Fahim, 21, both of Barishal, were arrested on December 3 during an investigation into an abduction of a travel agent in the capital’s Kuril area.

In the incident of torture and extortion, a two-member probe body has been formed, headed by DMP joint commissioner (cyber and special crime and DB-North) Khondkar Nurunnabi with deputy commissioner (administration) of the Tejgaon division of DB Shafiqul Islam being another member.

DB’s additional commissioner, Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, in an office order on December 11, asked the probe body to submit its investigation report within seven working days.

According to the office order, DB DC Abdul Ahad and some other officers of the Wari division of the intelligence branch had tortured businessman Jasim Uddin for money.

The DB officials also forcefully took a cheque of Tk 3.60 crore from businessman Jasim Uddin.

A committee comprising these two officials have been formed to investigate the complaint, said the office order.

DB officials also said that the DMP detective branch took step to carry out the probe in response to an allegation submitted by the suffering businessman.

Businessman Jasim Uddin in his written complaint brought allegations of torture and extortion of the cheque against those DB officials. He also sent copies of his complaint to the offices including home ministry and Police Headquarters.

In the incident of the arrest of the CID officers, Detective Branch of police additional commissioner Mohammad Harun or Rashid said that the arrests were made, while they were investigating the abduction case filed with the Bhatara police in August.

He also said that the police are investigating who else are involved with this racket.
