Household expenditure triples in 12 years: BBS

Data from the latest Household Income and Expenditure Survey has revealed that household’s expenditure has almost tripled in 12 years from Tk 11,200 in 2010 to Tk 31,500 in 2022, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.

The income has also tripled during the period in the country from Tk 11,479 in 2010 to Tk 32,422 in 2022 while poverty and extreme poverty rates have declined throughout the nation, reported Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.

In the final report of HIES 2022 launched on Wednesday, the BBS reported significant developments by selecting the quality enumerators, conducting residential training, Introducing CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing),improving data collection tools, substantially increasing the number of food and non-food items based on COICOP (Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose), and implementing continuous monitoring and supervision etc, BSS reported.

This has resulted in an improvement in data tracking and accuracy during the survey, which has been reflected in the consumption, income and expenditure aggregates, said the BSS report.

The Dissemination Program of the ‘Final Report of Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2022’ was held at BBS Auditorium in the capital’s Agargaon area.

Hossain Zillur Rahman, executive chairman, PPRC and chairman, BRAC, Shahnaz Arefin, secretary, Statistics and Informatics Division, Ministry of Planning and Md Kawser Ahmed, member (secretary), General Economics Division were present as special guests.

Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, Director General of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, chaired the programme.

The 2022 data found that household-level access to electricity increased to 99.3 per cent in 2022 from 75.9 per cent in 2016 and 55.3 per cent in 2010. Similarly, 92.3 per cent of households have access to improved toilet facilities, and 96.1 per cent have access to improved sources of drinking water.

Notably, Bangladesh’s literacy rate (7 years and over) rose significantly to 74 per cent in 2022 from 65.6 per cent in 2016 and 57.9 per cent in 2010.
