Woman raped by BCL leader, associate on JU campus

A woman was reportedly raped by a Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Jahangirnagar University unit leader and his associates on the university campus on Saturday night while her husband was kept confined in a room of a dormitory.

A case was filed against six people in this regard with the Ashulia police station and police arrested four, including prime accused, Bangladesh Chhatra League’s JU unit international affairs secretary Mustafizur Rahman.

‘Two youths held a man hostage, picked up his wife, and raped her in the jungle area on the university campus after the couple came to campus being invited by their neighbour Mamunur Rashid,’ said officer in-charge of Savar Model Police Station Abdur Rashik.

Police recorded the victim’s statement, the officer said.

According to the statement, international affairs secretary of Jahangirnagar University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League Mustafizur Rahman and his associate Mamunur Rashid raped the woman taking her to an isolated place on the campus at about 9:00pm.

The perpetrators kept her husband confined at the room number 317 of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall.

They released the man at about 10:30pm and he found his wife in front of the dormitory in a critical condition.

A group of BCL men ousted the couple from the campus and beat the man as he tried to protest at the incident.

The couple filed a complaint with the Savar Model Police. A team of the police conducted a drive on the campus at about 1:00am on Sunday to arrest the perpetrators.

Police also collected specimens from the scene.

The accused, along with his three associates, fled the scene by breaking open the lock of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall.

‘We have detained three JU students — Mostafa Monwar Siddiki Sagar, Sabbir Hossain, and Hasan Ali as they helped the accused to escape the scene,’ officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station Abdur Rashik said.

The officer also said that further drive would be conducted to arrest the prime accused.

Sagar, Sabbir, Hasan, and the prime accused Mustafizur Rahman are the followers of JU BCL president Akhtaruzzaman Shohel.

BCL central committee, in a press release on Sunday, permanently expelled JU BCL unit international affairs secretary Mustafizur Rahman for his involvement in the incident.

As soon as the news of the rape spread, hundreds of students burst into protests and staged a sit-in in front of the dormitory at about 6:00am on Sunday.

They demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.

‘The long-established culture of impunity has made the BCL men more furious. It is the liability of the university administration as they have given sheltering to a non-student BCL men at the dormitory,’ convener of JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra Union Alif Mahmud said.

The protesters also placed a four-point demand that included resignation of the hall provost.

JU proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan said, ‘We will do everything to help the police in their investigation in the case.’
