Colorful festivities mark Pohela Falgun

People of Bangladesh are celebrating Pohela Falgun, the first day of spring in the Bangla month of Falgun, with colourful attire, flowers and songs.

Falgun is the eleventh month in the Bangla calendar and the first month of the season, spring. Warm sunshine, blooming flowers and chirping birds make spring the king of all the six seasons in Bangladesh.

Bakultala of Charukola, the premises of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University, became the centre of celebration in the capital as thousands gathered there on Wednesday morning on the occasion of Pohela Falgun.

The tradition of celebrating Pohela Falgun in Bangladesh started in the Bangla calendar year 1401. Since then, the National Spring Celebration Council has been celebrating Pohela Falgun regularly with jovial cultural festivity at Bakultala of Charukola in the morning.

Pohela Falgun festivities began there with the organization’s event at 7am.

It was also scheduled to host similar festivities in the afternoon on the open stage at Uttara Rabindra Sarani and Bahadur Shah Park in the capital.

Different organizations, including the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), institutions and businesses are celebrating this year’s festive February 14 with multiple programs.

The Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will hold a special dance recital titled “Bawshanto Nrittyo” in the capital’s Ramna Park at 3:30pm with 225 dance artists. A festive procession will be heading to its premises after that, and the cultural event on the open premises of the academy will feature musical performances, recitations, dance recitals and choreography of spring-themed Bangladeshi fashion.
