Rooftop restaurant in Dhanmondi's Twin Peak building demolished

Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) has demolished a rooftop restaurant and another establishment at the Gawsia Twin Peak building in Dhanmondi’s Satmasjid Road in the capital.

Rajuk Executive Magistrate Tazina Sarwar ordered the demolition of the structures on Monday afternoon.

Of the two structures, one was a restaurant Retro Live Kitchen and the other was an under-construction establishment.

Rajuk officials said the building was initially approved as F-1 for commercial purposes. However, for the establishment of a restaurant, it requires an F-2 approval -- which the building did not have.

On the other hand, Rajuk also did not approve any plans that mentioned that the building would have any establishment on its rooftop.

Alamgir Hossain, service manager of the Gawsia Twin Peak Building, said Rajuk officials visited the building on Sunday and closed all the restaurants.

The police have sent letters to all restaurants and asked the authorities to go to the police station within three days with their licenses.

The move comes after at least 46 people were killed, and over 20 others sustained severe injuries by a devastating fire on Thursday night.

Firefighters rescued 70 people, including 42 in unconscious state, from the rooftop and different floors of the seven-storey Green Cozy Cottage.

The fire broke out at around 9:45pm.

Most of the people died as they jumped off the building or from burns or suffocation, said firefighters who brought the fire under control around 12:30am.

Fire officials say the blaze spread fast due to the presence of gas cylinders on several floors in the restaurant kitchens. People could not leave the building due to smoke in the staircase.
