Have local fruits in Iftar instead of dates: minister

Industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Monday said that fasting in the month of Ramdan should be broken with local fruits like jujubes and guavas instead of foreign fruits--dates and apples.

‘Why dates, apples and grapes will be required to break fasting?’ the industries minister questioned while talking to reporters after meeting with deputy commissioners in the capital during the DCs’ four-day annual conference that began in Dhaka on Sunday.

‘Have local fruits like jujube and guavas during the iftar,’ said the industries minister, who was accompanied by state minister for commerce, Ahasanul Islam Titu, during the briefing.

The session of the ongoing DCs’ conference was stipulated for discussion between DCs and the ministries of industries and commerce.

The industries minister noted that the plate should be decorated with local fruits since the government had limitations to import many items against the backdrop of the dollar shortage.

Referring to prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s decision of not holding the iftar parties at the government level, the industries minister asked all to see the government’s problems like the individuals’ own problems.

Earlier on the same day, finance minister Abul Hassan Mahmud Ali said that inflation should not be the main concern since one crore people were given food items at subsidised rates.
