Case filed over death of five people in launch accident

A case was filed with the South Keraniganj police station on Thursday night against five people over the death of five, including three of a family, in a launch accident at Sadarghat Launch Terminal in Dhaka earlier on the day.

The case was filed aganist five staff members of MV Farhan-6 and Tasrif-4 for their alleged involvement in causing the deaths due to negligence, fast and reckless driving and using old rope, according to the case statement.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority traffic management department joint director Muhammad Ismail Hossain filed the case.

The accused in the case are MV Farhan-6 1st class master Abdur Rouf Talukder, 54, its second class master Md Selim Hawlader, 54, and its manager Md Faruk Khan, 70, the case statement added.

Two others accused are MV Tasrif-4 1st class master Md Mizanur Rahman, 43, and second class master Md Moniruzzaman, 27.

The accident took place when MV Farhan-6 tried to enter between two anchored launches MV Tasrif-4 and MV Pubali-1 at about 3:00pm at pontoon 11, said naval police and BIWTA officials.

The anchor rope of MV Tasrif tore and hit the five while they were boarding the launch, they said, adding that they rushed the five to Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital where doctors on duty declared them dead.

The deceased are Md Belal, 30, his wife Mukta and their three-year-old girl Maisha of Mathbaria in Pirojpur, and Rabiul, 19, of Thakurgaon and Ripon Hawlader, 38, a resident of Patuakhali, said the case statement.

South Keraniganj police station duty officer Modasser Hossain said that the accused were now the custody of naval police.
