Sajek road accident death toll reaches nine

Three more workers, who were injured after a truck fell into a roadside ditch at Sajek in Rangamati's Baghaichari on Wednesday evening, died at night taking the death toll to nine.

The three injured died at about 11:30pm on Wednesday, Sajek union parishad chairman Atulal Chakma told New Age on Thursday morning.

He said that another three to four injured were undergoing treatment at Khagrachari District Sadar Hospital.

The accident took place at about 6:00pm on Wednesday at a remote place called Ninety Degree in Udaipur border area when a truck carrying over a dozen construction workers fell into a roadside ditch at Sajek in Rangamati’s Baghaichari.

Six of the workers died on the spot while eight others were injured in the accident, said Shirin Akter, Baghaichari upazila nirbahi officer.

A fire service rescue team and a police unit rescued the injured and sent them to Khagrachari Sadar Hospital, Shirin said.

Sajek union parishad chairman Atulal Chakma told New Age that the accident took place when about 14 workers of the border road construction were returning home after work.

‘The truck fell down near the Ninety Degree hills after its driver lost control leaving six of them dead on the spot,’ he said.
