Couple found dead in Gazipur apartment

Police recovered the bodies of a couple from their rented apartment in Mawna Mulaid area under Sreepur in Gazipur on Friday morning.

The deceased are Md Israfil, 17, son of Md Mofizul Haque of Haldi village under Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur district, and Rokeya Khatun, 15, daughter of Abul Kashem of Pastari village under Ishwarganj upazila in Mymensingh.

On Friday morning, their bodies were recovered from a ground-floor apartment of a multi-storey building owned by Md Faruk Khan in Mawna Mulaid area of the upazila.

The police, quoting the locals and the couple’s family members, said that the duo got involved in a love affair and got married seven to eight months ago without the consent of the family.

Israfil used to work in a local workshop, and Rokeya worked in a local factory.

Rokeya’s brother Md Borhan Uddin said that Israfil and Rokeya got married seven to eight months ago and, recently, Israfil left home after a quarrel with his parents.

Later on Thursday, he said, the couple were brought back home.

He said that they received the news of their deaths Friday morning.

Israfil’s father Mofizul Haque said that they used to live in the apartment adjacent to Israfil’s one and used to cook for the family at Israfil’s apartment.

On Friday morning, he said, he saw Israfil hanging from the door of the flat and found Rokeya’s body on the bed.

Md Sakhawat Hossain, inspector (investigation) of Sreepur Police Station, said that they, on information from the locals, recovered the bodies from the apartment.

He said that circumstantial evidence shows that the couple committed suicide.
