Schools, colleges closed across Bangladesh, primary schools until May 2

The Ministry of Education announced the closure of all secondary schools, colleges, madrasas, and technical education institutions in Khulna and Rajshahi divisions and several districts of Bangladesh on Tuesday due to the ongoing heatwave.

All the secondary schools, colleges, madrasas and technical institutions in Dhaka, Tangail, Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Gazipur and Manikganj in Dhaka division, Kurigram and Dinajpur in Rangpur division and Patuakhali district in Barisal division will remain closed on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education announced that all primary schools of the country will remain closed until May 2.

Earlier on Monday, the High Court ordered the closure of primary and secondary schools and madrasa classes till Thursday amid the ongoing heatwave.

The High Court bench of Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Khizir Hayat gave the directives.

All secondary schools, colleges, madrasas and technical educational institutions were ordered to remain closed on Monday on the advice of the Ministry of Health and the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Education in a circular said that institutions with air conditioning were allowed to operate if authorities wanted.

A moderate to severe heatwave is affecting the country including the capital Dhaka.

As a result, the met office on Sunday again issued a 72-hour or three-day heat alert across the country.

Meanwhile, Chuadanga experienced 43°C temperature on Monday, the highest in 10 years.

Jaminur Rahman, in-charge of the Chuadanga Weather Observatory Centre, said they have recorded 43°C temperature at 3pm in Chuadanga and it may rise after the evening.

This is the highest temperature recorded in the past 10 years in the district, he said.

On May 21, 2014, Chuadanga recorded 43.2°C temperature.
