Suspected drug peddler killed Chuadanga ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug peddler has been killed in a “gunfight” with the police in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga.

The deceased is Abdul Barek, 41, who hailed from Karpasdanga village of the same upazila.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Damurhuda police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sukumar Biswas said: “A team of policemen came under attack near Muktarpur village while it was transporting listed criminal Abdul Barek to local police station after his arrest.

“Barek’s cohorts began shooting at the police team, forcing them to retaliate. He received fatal bullet injuries from the gunfire of his cohorts, as he was trying to make his escape. Barek was taken to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead on arrival.”

Police sources said four policemen were injured in the incident. A locally-made gun, two bullets, two machetes, one sack of phensedyl, and three pairs of sandals were also seized from the area.

OC Sukumar Biswas added that Abdul Barek was known as a notorious criminal and a listed drug peddler in the region. He is accused in 15 cases at multiple police stations.
