Gas supply to stay shut in Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi areas for 24hrs

Gas supply to Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Azimpur and nearby areas will be disrupted for 24 hours today as the authorities are conducting an urgent maintenance work in the gas transmission system.

As a result people in the residential areas including Shyamoli are facing disruption in the gas supply since this morning.

Residents in many of these areas did not know ahead of time about the disruption in gas supply for such an extended period of time.

Long queue in front of Dhanmondi food shops

Following the disruption of gas supply since this morning, many residents of Dhanmondi were seen queued up in front food shops including of Star Kabab restaurant at Dhanmondi 12/a to buy lunch.

Murad Hossain, a doctor by profession, said, “We found out in the morning that there is no gas supply. So, I had to come here to buy food for the family. It would have been better if we were informed earlier.”

No prior notice about the gas disruption, says Farhana in Dhanmondi

“I did not know about the authorities’ decision to shut off gas supply,” says Farhana Ahmed, a journalist and a resident of Dhanmondi Road 6.

There was no prior notice, she added.

“Gas pressure at my kitchen burners were low since this morning,” she said.

Meanwhile, another homemaker in Shyamoli Jahanara Kalam said, “there is no gas at all in her house and she does not know now how she will continue with her days regular activities.”

Mahdi Hasan, a resident of Dhaka’s West Rajabazar area told The Daily Star that there was no gas at his house since 10:30am when he last checked.

“We have not heard any announcements prior to the shutdown in our area,” he said adding that this sudden disruption of gas supply for 24 hours is uncalled for and will result in mass suffering.

“How are we going to prepare food for the day? Not everyone feels comfortable about going to restaurants to get all the meals in a day,” Mahdi Hasan added.

Residents of Talbagh area of Savar, in the outskirts of Dhaka, told our local correspondent that there was no gas supply since this morning.

Gas supply was disrupted around 8:00am bringing great sufferings to the locals, he said.

"Accident" caused gas disruption in Savar, says Titas official

Meanwhile, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of Titas Gas Regional Office of Savar, Moksedur Rahman, said the gas disruption in many areas of his zone was the result of an “accident,” reports the correspondent.

“A sudden technical glitch resulted in the shutting down of gas supply, authorities are working to fix it and it will approximately take 24 hours,” our Savar correspondent quoted the DGM as saying.

As it was an accident, there was no prior notice, he added.

Gas supply unstable in Shewrapara, East Senpara of Mirpur

Rupy Akter, a homemaker of Mirpur’s Shewrapara area told The Daily Star that gas supply was uninterrupted at her end although many neighbouring houses were suffering from unstable gas supply.

She also said none in the area had any idea about the gas shut down beforehand.

Many people of Mirpur’s East Senpara are also reported to be facing similar problems.

Gas transmission from the CGS plants in Ashulia and Aminbazar to the TITAS system will remain halted from 8:00am until the next 24hrs, according to the Power and Energy division of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd.

Gas supply will either remain halted or pressure will be low in Ashulia, Savar, Aminbazar, Gabtoli, Mirpur, Paikpara, Pirerbagh, Kalyanpur, Shyamoli, Ring Road, Mansurabad, Kadirabad, Mohammadpur, Lalmatia, Dhanmondi, Azimpur and Hazaribagh, reads an SMS issued in this regard.
