Recovery of Tk 80 lakh: DIG Partha sent to jail

A Dhaka court today sent Partha Gopal Banik, deputy inspector general (prisons) of Sylhet division, to jail after rejecting his bail petition in connection with a case filed over recovery of Tk 80 lakh from his Dhanmondi residence.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Senior Special Judge’s Court of Dhaka passed the order after Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) produced the DIG before it this afternoon.

Earlier today, ACC Assistant Director Salauddin Ahmed filed the case against Partha Gopal Banik with the commission.

The ACC in their forwarding report said they have arrested the DIG from his Dhanmondi residence with Tk 80 lakh amassed through illegal means.

“So, the DIG should be confined in jail until the investigation is completed,” the ACC said in the report.

On the other hand, the defence lawyer said in the bail petition that their client earned the money through legal way.

“The DIG was implicated in the case with ill motive to harass him and thus he should be granted bail,” the DIG’s lawyer Masud Ahmed Talukdar said.

The ACC yesterday detained the DIG from his residence in Dhaka for allegedly obtained the money through corruption.

A team of the anti-corruption watchdog recovered the cash from Partha’s house in Dhanmondi.

ACC Director Mohammad Yousuf quizzed Partha over allegations that he committed irregularities and corruption when he was serving as DIG (prisons) of Chattogram division.
