Army officer injured in shootout with UPDF faction

A shootout took place between a faction of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF Prosit) and the Bangladesh Army in Khagrachhari on Wednesday.

An army officer was shot in his right leg during the shootout that started in Barudolu of Manikchari upazila around 5:10pm, said Inter Service Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) Assistant Director Rashedul Alam Khan.

The exchange of fire took place when an army patrol team came face to face with several armed criminals, according to ISPR.

Contacted, Manikchari police station officer-in-charge or OC (investigation) said, injured Major Md Anisur Rahman, deputy commander of Lakkhichari zone, was taken to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Chittagong for treatment.

The team also detained bullet wounded UPDF member Jonopriya Chakma, son of Dhirendra Lal Chakma of Dighinala in Khagrachhari upazila, according to the police OC.

Jonopriya, with bullet wounds to his lower abdomen, was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for treatment, he added.

The Army patrol team also recovered an SMG, a magazine with 26 bullet rounds, and some other materials from the spot, according to the ISPR release.

Soon after, the army team started conducting searches in the surrounding areas to apprehend the ones involved in the shootout.

Aungya Marma, organizer of the Khagrachari district unit of UPDF Prosit, said his party men were not involved in the shootout as they are not active in the area where the shootout took place.
