One killed, 45 hurt in Rangpur train crash

A person was killed in a local train accident when its driver was changing the engine at Kaunia Junction in Rangpur today.

The deceased was identified as Apel Mahmud, 20, a student.

At least 15 people were admitted into Kaunia Upazila Health Complex and Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) with critical injuries, our Rangpur correspondent reports quoting Md Samsuzzoha, deputy director of Fire Service and Civil Defence in Rangpur.

Another 30 people were given primary treatment after the accident, Dr Atikur Rahman of Kaunia Upazila Health Complex said.

The doctors suspected that the death toll might rise.

The engine of the Uttarbanga Mail train accidentally pushed the train with very high speed while it was being changed at the junction around 4:00 pm, damaging its two compartments, Md Samsuzzoha said.

Critically injured, Apel Mahmud died on the spot, he added.

Meanwhile, a five-member committee has been formed by Bangladesh Railway West Zone to investigate the accident, said Shafiqur Rahman, Lalmonirhat railway divisional manager.
