Woman held for chopping neighbour's plants in Savar

A woman has been detained by police for chopping down around 50 of her neighbour's plants on the rooftop of their apartment building in Savar.

Police held Khaleda Akhtar Lucky, from her apartment at CRP Road in Savar on Wednesday afternoon after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

"Khaleda Akhtar Lucky has been detained as she is accused of destroying her neighbour's plants,” Savar model police station officer-in-charge AFM Sayed said.

According to the residents of the building, Khaleda destroyed the plants following a feud with her neighbour Ratna Habib who owns the plants.

"No case has been filed yet in this regard, however, her neighbour Ratna Habib will be contacted," he added.

Ratna Habib's daughter Sumaiya Habib recorded the video of the incident on Tuesday afternoon.

The viral video showed Khaleda, who owners a flat in the building, chopping down plants of the rooftop garden with a machete and screaming at her neighbour.

"My mother nurtured the plants with great care. The plants harmed no one. We have a right to use the roof like everyone else in the building," Sumaiya said.

On the other hand, Khaleda claimed many residents opined that plants should not be kept on the roof as the roof is not anyone's personal property.

After the video went viral, the vice-president of an organization named Green Save visited the place and gifted some new plants to the Ratna Habib's family and assured that they will help them in any way they can.
