Staging demos is not unconstitutional: Noman

Bangladesh nationalist Party (BNP) Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman has pronounced that they have not acted in any unconstitutional or illegal way by demonstrating on the streets.

He made the declaration while staging a protest in front of the High Court on Tuesday, demanding the release of their jailed party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

He said: "State power actually belongs to the general people. However, they are now persecuted due to the shift in power."

Expressing anger for not being able to raise their voice, he said: "We are not allowed to speak up, lest it's considered a crime.”

"But it's not a crime if the ruling party activists are involved in casino activities."

The senior BNP leader said: "We demand the release of our Chairperson Khaleda Zia."

Claiming that the prices of onions are beyond people's buying capacity, Noman further said: "As the opposition party, it is our constitutional right to be able to hold demonstrations about the rising prices of onions."

Alleging that the country's law and order has deteriorated, Noman called on the government to resolve the matter.

Earlier in the day, a group of BNP men, led by its Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman, gathered at the busy thoroughfare in front of the High Court.
