Mirpur murder victims strangled to death, doctor says

The autopsy report of the woman and her domestic help who were found dead inside a house in Mirpur, revealed their cause of death to be strangulation.

Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Lecturer KM Mainuddin confirmed the matter on Wednesday.

Another test will be conducted to confirm whether the domestic help Shumi was raped.

On Tuesday, police recovered the bodies of Shaheda Begum, 65, a housewife, and her domestic help Sumi Akter, 15 from a multi-storied house in Dhaka's Mirpur 2.

“We rushed to the spot after being informed and found the bodies lying on the floor of Shaheda’s flat in that building around 7:30pm,” said Mirpur police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Syed Akter Hossain.

“Afterwards, we notified the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). They later recovered the bodies,” he added.

Khairul Amin, assistant commissioner (AC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Mirpur zone), said: “Initially, it looks like they were strangled to death. But we will confirm the cause of death after autopsies.”

Quoting Shaheda's neighbours, Khairul said that the woman's adopted son and her second husband used to visit her often. Shaheda also had a daughter who lives in Narayanganj.

However, police are yet to identify and find them.

Sumi had started working at Shaheda’s house on Monday, police said, quoting the teen’s aunt, who found the bodies first when she went to the flat on the fourth floor.

Sumi's aunt said she had found the flat’s main door open.

No case was filed and no arrests were made over the incident until this report was filed at 10:30pm.
