Bangladesh cop on fresh 5-day remand over sharing info with India's RAW

A judicial magistrate’s court remanded on Monday constable Dev Prashad Saha in police custody for five more days over sedition charge allegedly for spying for Indian external intelligence unit Research and Analysis Wing, better known as RAW.

The senior judicial magistrate, Saifuddin Hussain, allowed police to question the former immigration police constable, who was posted at Armed Police Battalion in Dhaka during his arrest, for five more days in police custody, said Jashore court inspector Fakir Azizur Rahman.

One of the investigators said that they could not collect enough information from the ‘strong man’, so that they needed more time to interrogate him.

The court inspector said Dev Prasad’s lawyer argued that he should be released on bail.

Earlier on December 19, the same court remanded Dev for five days after his arrest in Dhaka in connection with the First Information Report lodged with the Benapol police on December 15.

The Benapol police prosecuted a superintendent of police Abdullah Aref, constable Dev Prashad Saha, army soldier Shahnewaz Shaheen and army office assistant Abu Hamjala Rana, among others, for sharing sensitive information of security agencies to the Indian intelligence agency.

The FIR filed on December 15 reads the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, commonly known as DGFI, and Rapid Action Battalion arrested army soldier Shah Newaz at a hotel in the capital’s Kamalapur on October 25, 2018.

Based on his information, Dev Prasad’s involvement in sharing information to India was found, it read.

There is a single Abdullaha Aref serving as superintendent of police and he was stationed in river police unit.

Aref’s colleagues at river police told New Age that he left Dhaka on December 16 for Saudi Arabia to perform umrah.

Until Thursday, the police headquarters officials did not confirm the role of Abdullah Aref who played significant role to bring back listed ‘top terrors’ from India to Bangladesh in the past.

Inter Services Public Relation Directorate director Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Ibn Zaid did not share the whereabouts of the army soldier held over the allegation in October 2018.

RAB spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sarwar Bin Kashem also did not share any information over soldier Shah Newaz Shaheen until Sunday.
