Students of the Department of Political Science of DU demanded immediate arrest of the rapist and and putting him behind bars to face a speedy trial.
They put forth their demands at a human chain on Tuesday in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture around 12.30pm.
Rapists should be hanged publicly, they emphasized. In a show of determination for justice, protesting students also burned an effigy representing the rapist involved in the recent assault on a Dhaka University student.
Earlier on Sunday evening, a second year female student of Dhaka University was raped by unidentified assailant(s) at a secluded place in the city’s Kurmitola area. She left the campus on board a university bus and headed for her friend's house at Khilkhet's Shewra neighbourhood. On her way, she got off at Kurmitola by mistake around 7pm, her friends and teachers told reporters after she was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around midnight.
Shahriar Shaon, a second year undergrad student of the department, said: "Thisrape case should be transferred to the speedy tribunal. Bureaucratic red tape plays a key role in delaying justice in this country.
"In most cases, contemporary laws have failed to deliver justice to rape victims. This law should be revised and updated," he added.
Following campus wide demonstrations on Monday seeking justice for the victim, the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) based socio-cultural organizations demanded renewing ties between Dhaka University and Dhaka Cantonment authorities in an effort to restore privileges of DU buses to operate in the thoroughfares of Dhaka cantonment.
Addressing a human chain in front of the TSC on Tuesday, Dhaka University Debating Society President SM Abdullah Al Faisal said: “The relationship between the army and Dhaka University is not very warm since 2007, following a clash held between the students of DU and some army personnel.
"We request the DU administration to re-negotiate with the army to lift restrictions over DU buses using cantonment roads. Our students would feel safer travelling through cantonment roads."
He also demanded immediate arrest of the culprit(s) involved in the recent rape of the DU student.
In a similar event, BM Jobol-E-Rahamat, general secretary of Dhaka University Film Society (DUFS), voiced his concern over the deteriorating law and order situation of the country and demanded reassurance from the authorities for the safety and security of every woman in the country.
He said: "I pray that such a horrific incident never happens again to traumatize our sisters."
