HC to release full verdict on Wednesday

The High Court (HC) set the date for release of the full text of its verdict that awarded death penalty to 139 out of 152 convicts in Pilkhana case on Wednesday.

"Three-member bench of the HC led by Justice Shawkat Hossain signed the full text of the verdict after the bench completed writing the judgement,” said Supreme Court Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik on Tuesday.

The full text of the verdict will be released at 10 am, he added.

On Nov 26 and 27, 2017, the HC announced the verdict in which it awarded death penalty to 139 of the 152 accused who were earlier sentenced to capital punishment by a lower court for their involvement in the massacre during the BDR mutiny.

The mutiny by some members of the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) had started in the Pilkhana headquarters of the border guards in the capital Dhaka on Feb 25, 2009 and ended the following day.

As many as 74 people, including 57 army officers were killed. The mutiny had spread to other BDR camps across the country but no killing was reported outside Dhaka.

The incident also drew international concern. After the mutiny, BDR was renamed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and its uniform changed.

Eight years later in 2017, the High Court awarded death penalties to 139 people for their roles in the country’s bloodiest mutiny. Another 185 people were sentenced to life in prison while 228 others were jailed for various terms.
