Dr Yunus sued for labour laws violation

Nobel laureate and Grameen Communications Chairman Dr Muhammad Yunus and three others have been sued in a criminal lawsuit for violating labour laws.

Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments Inspector Tariqul Islam filed the lawsuit in a labour court on Sunday (Jan 5).

The three others sued are Grameen Communications Managing Director Nazneen Sultana and Deputy General Manager Gauri Shankar and Director A Hai Khan.

According to the case documents, a visit to Grameen Communications on Oct 10 last year saw 10 violations of the labour laws.

Prior to that on Apr 30, the inspector saw the same violations on Apr 30 and issued a warning to fix those.

The violations include workers not being given, appointment letters, IDs with photographs, service books, the working hours not being approved by the inspector, yearly and half-yearly returns not being filed, workers not cashing in half of the earned leave, the company’s appointment policies not approved by the inspector general, not maintaining registers for special duties during holidays, not forming a safety committee amongst others.
