Report: Road accidents claimed 7,855 lives in 2019

A report of Bangladesh Passengers’ Welfare Association has disclosed that around 7,855 people were killed and 13,330 were injured in 5,516 road accidents last year.

Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, general secretary of Bangladesh Passengers Welfare Association (BPWA), presented the report at a press conference by Crime Reporters' Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) office in Dhaka's Segunbagicha on Saturday morning.

Compared to 2018, there was an 8.07% increase in deaths by road accidents last year.

The report also stated that 219 and 469 people were killed in 203 and 482 accidents occurred in water and railways, respectively. In waterways, 282 people were injured and 375 went missing during the accidents, whereas 706 got injured in rail accidents.

The report was prepared by monitoring news reports on accidents published in regional, national, and online newspapers, Mozammel said.

According to the report, a total of 8,543 people were killed and 14,318 injured in 6,201 accidents that occurred in road, water and rail ways across Bangladesh in 2019.
