Border killing very shameful: FM

Killing along the Bangladesh-India border is very shameful as the bilateral relation between the two countries was very good, foreign minister AK Abdul Momen said on Sunday.

‘We called on the Indian high commissioner recently and told that it is a very shameful matter for us,’ the minister said in reply to a question on border killing at a press conference.

‘We want an amicable solution to it,’ he added.

The two countries have agreed to stop border killing and use of lethal weapon, he said, adding, ‘but the border killing could not be stopped.’

The two countries had discussed the matter at a meeting at the level of chiefs of the border forces, where the chief of the Border Guard of Bangladesh sought a solution to the problem, he said.

The Indian authorities show many excuses, including trespassing into its land from Bangladesh, Momen said stressing the need for stopping irregular crossing of the border by Bangladesh people.

‘Many people irregularly cross the border out of greed for a small amount of money. The Indian people claim that they are often attacked by groups of Bangladeshi people. These must be stopped,’ he added.

Some 12 Bangladeshis were killed by Indian border guards in last one month.

Indian Border Security Force have killed 294 Bangladeshis along the Bangladesh-India frontiers in past 10 years, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan told parliament in July last year.

Forty-three Bangladeshis were killed by Indians in bordering areas and 37 of them were shot dead in 2019, according to rights group Ain o Salish Kendra.

Foreign secretary Masud Bin Momen and foreign ministry’s maritime affairs secretary Md Khurshed Alam were present at the press conference.
