HC steps in to stop price hike of masks

The High Court has directed the government to mobilize mobile courts to prevent the price hike of masks, hand wash and sanitizers.

The bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader came up with a six-point directive on Monday, reports UNB.

The order comes as the prices of masks, hand wash and sanitizers have shot up abnormally, after authorities on Sunday confirmed that they have identified the first three patients in Bangladesh infected with Covid-19, a new strain of coronavirus that has killed over 3,800 people around the world.

The infected patients include two men and one woman, and all of them are currently in quarantine.

As of Monday, the global death toll from the coronavirus outbreak, which started in China’s Wuhan city at the end of December last year, climbed to 3,831.

The virus has so far infected a total of 110,381 people worldwide, according to worldometer, while some 62,397 patients — 94% of total infected — made recovery.

Covid-19 is affecting 109 countries and territories, including Bangladesh, and one international conveyance (the Diamond Princess cruise ship harboured in Yokohama, Japan) around the world.

On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization had declared the coronavirus outbreak a Global Public Health Emergency.
