Amnesty welcomes govt move to release Khaleda Zia

The Amnesty International on Tuesday welcomed the government's decision to release former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia from jail.

"We welcome the Bangladeshi authorities' decision to release Begum Khaleda Zia from jail on humanitarian grounds," said Amnesty in tweet.

The organisation said as she has been suffering from a life-threatening illness, she must be given unrestricted access to the healthcare she needs.

Earlier in the day, Law Minister Anisul Huq has said Khaleda Zia will be released from jail for six months suspending her sentences upon two conditions.

He came up with the announcement at a press conference at his Gulshan office.

The conditions are receiving treatment staying at her Gulshan residence and not leaving the country.

Khaleda Zia has been in jail since she was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust case on February 8, 2018.

She was found guilty in another corruption case later the same year, though her party claims both cases are politically motivated.

She has been receiving treatment at BSMMU since April 1 last year.
