Needy people snatch relief materials from truck 

Low-income people, including daily wage earners who are hit hard due to the fallout from the coronavirus outbreak, have snatched materials from a truck carrying relief goods for 600 people of three wards in Jamalpur municipality.

The incident took place at Mukundabari area under Ward-6 in the municipality around 11:30 am today, reports our local correspondent quoting a councillor.

The truck was loaded with 600 10-kg bags of rice and 600 3-kg bags of potatoes, provided by the municipality to reach three councillors of wards 2, 4 and 6.

Of the relief materials, 200 bags of rice and 200 bags of potatoes were allocated for 200 people in each ward, said Jamal Pasha, councillor of Ward-6.

When the truck carrying the relief materials reached Mukundabari area, a large number of jobless poor people intercepted the vehicle and snatched around 450 bags of rice and potatoes from the truck, said Jamal Pasha.

Locals said the people, who took away the relief materials from the truck, have been facing a food crisis since the district came under lockdown on Thursday.

When contacted, Mirza Sakhawatul Alam Moni, mayor of Jamalpur municipality, said, "We will continue to provide relief materials to the people who are in need."
