The government has suspended the selling of coarse rice (Boro) at Tk10 per kg from Monday, until further notice, for mass gatherings at the sale centres.
Directorate of Food Director General (DG) Sarwar Mahmud confirmed the matter.
He said: “We have suspended selling rice at Tk10 per kg with direction from top government officials as to avoid mass gatherings.
“We are now looking for alternative ways to sell rice, by maintaining social distance,” he told Dhaka Tribune.
The authorities have noticed several cases of corruption and irregularities across the country, and also social distancing is not maintained in such selling process.
